Tokyo has chosen its first female governor, the Arabic-talking naturalist and North Korea hawk Yuriko Koike.

A previous Japanese defense minister, the 64-year-old got over a million votes more than her closest opponent, Hiroya Masuda, who was sponsored by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

This is a big leap for the country, as koike is one of only three ladies at present serving as legislative head of one of the nation’s 47 prefectures.
