No less than 247 individuals were killed after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy Wednesday, as indicated by Italy’s Civil Protection Department.

The  tremor hit 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southeast of Norcia at 3:36 a.m. (9:36 p.m. Tuesday ET).

Italy’s Civil Protection office said of the general population lost in the tremor, no less than 53 of them were in the town of Amatrice, and no less than 100 individuals were harmed. Different fatalities were accounted for in the close-by towns of Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto.
